【和訳】The Killers - Joel, The Lump of Coal

今年はJimmy Kimmelでのお披露目といいこともあってか、AIDSdayに合わせての発売になりました。
スキットも面白かったので、後日テキトーに訳したいと思います。とりあえず今夜は取り急ぎ…。

キラーズの曲に出てくるサンタさんは鬼畜ですね。たぶんこの曲のサンタさんも、例のサンタさんだと思います。JoelはKimmel氏のお達しに従って「ジョール」としました。

Some time ago at Santa’s place up in the old North pole
今より少し昔のお話です
古き良き北極の奥地にある
サンタさんのお家に

There lived a lump of anthracite whose parents called him Joel
炭のかたまりが暮らしていて
両親は彼を"ジョール"と呼んでいました

Happy as a lump can be

He just wants to keep Santa warm and make the elves cosy
彼の望みといえば どんなときも
サンタさんを暖めてあげること

But Santa Claus has other plans for Joel one fateful day

予想外の役目をあてがいました

"Joel, you’re just the lump I need, come join me on my sleigh"
「ジョエル
君みたいな石炭が入り用なんだ
一緒にソリに乗っておくれ」

Heart leapt up with joy
胸は喜びではち切れんばかり

I’ll soon be Santa’s present to a lucky girl or boy
もうすぐサンタさんからの贈り物として
幸運な少女か少年に出会えるんだ

We’ll laugh and play together and we’ll hold each other tight
一緒に笑って 一緒に遊んで
大の仲良しになりたいな

Snuggle under clean white sheets when we go to sleep at night
夜眠るときには
まっさらなシーツにくるまって
気持ち良く横になろう

Then Santa’s elves all laughed at Joel
するとサンタさんの妖精たちは
一斉にジョールを笑ったのです

"You’re in for a surprise. You’re not a special Christmas gift, you’re just a booby PRIZE
「驚くことになるだろうがな
お前はクリスマスのご褒美じゃない
お前はただの残念賞さ

What kid would ever want you? You’re filthy as can be
お前をほしがる子供がどこにいる？
この上なく不潔なやつめ

and now you have to go and live with one who’s been naughty.”
さっさと行けよ
これからは悪い子と一緒に暮らすんだ」

"But I make heat," poor Joel cried
"And electricity"
「でも僕は 熱を作れるんだよ」
可哀想なジョールは言いました
「それに 電気も」

"You pollute the air with CO2 and Mercury"
「CO2と水銀で大気を汚染するくせに」

Fell down upon his knees
彼は膝から崩れ落ちました

"I don’t want to live with a naughty kid, don’t make me, Santa, please"
「悪い子となんか暮らしたくないよ
やめてよ サンタさん おねがいです」

But Santa laughed his jolly laugh
けれどもサンタさんは愉快に笑いました

"Ho ho, you stupid lump,
「ホゥ・ホゥ
おばかな石炭くん

you’re just the thing to teach this brat that Santa ain’t no chump, ho ho ho!"
ガキにサンタさんはマヌケ野郎じゃないと教えてやる
君はその道具に過ぎないのさ
ホゥ・ホゥ・ホゥ！」

So off they flew and before he knew Joel was in a sack
そして彼らは空へ飛び立ち
ジョールはいつの間にか
袋詰めにされていたのです

he cried and yelled to Santa Claus
彼はサンタクロースに向かって
大声を上げて泣き 訴えかけました

"Why don’t we just go back?"
「このまま家に帰るのはどう？」

And then came Christmas morning and much to Joel’s surprise
そうしてクリスマスの朝がやって来て
ジョールは心底驚きました

He saw a boy with the saddest face and tears were in his eyes
彼の目に入ってきたのは
悲しげな顔をした男の子
目に涙を浮かべています

He picked Joel up, he held him, he said “You can be my friend”
ジョールを拾い上げ 手に取ると
こう言いました
「僕の友達にしてあげてもいいよ」

"I would have liked some presents but you’re what Santa chose to send"
「本当は贈り物がほしかったけど
サンタさんが君に決めたなら 仕方ないね」

"It’s true I’ve been a naughty boy and maybe that’s a sin"
「僕が悪い子なのは本当のことだし
きっとそれって悪いことなんだろうね」

"But if this is how Santa treats the kids, I’m just glad that I’m not him"
「でもサンタさんが子ども相手に
こんな仕打ちをする人なら
僕はサンタさんじゃなくて良かったな」
